Nick Vellis had a long career in law enforcement and retired as a police captain. He moved into intelligence and data analysis, first in the private sector and later as a contract analyst for a federal law enforcement agency. The career taught him how investigations go sideways, how people build convincing lies, and what it costs the people who have to sort it out anyway.
His debut, Dig Two Graves: Revenge or Honor, is a World War II thriller drawn from his father’s experiences in Nazi-occupied Greece. The five Mac Everett novels are a private-eye series set in present-day Orlando, where the sun is relentless, and the corruption runs deep. The series ends with Back to Being Dead. It grew out of a lifelong love of Hammett, Chandler and Parker, and later Connelly, Sandford and James Lee Burke.
Then he wanted to try something completely different. The Rust Bucket Recoveries is a warm, wry workplace comedy set in space, for readers of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Red Dwarf. Book 1, Total Loss, sends an exiled fraud investigator and the cheapest repo crew in the galaxy after a yacht whose butler will not let anyone leave.
Away from the desk, Nick stays active with a handful of hobbies. In space, he enjoys Red Dwarf, Hyperdrive, Star Trek: Lower Decks and The Martian. He lives in Florida.
